Evidence suggests that the Wichita area was inhabited as early as 3,000 BCE. Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado was the first non-native person to visit the area in 1541, and U.S. citizens started settling in the 1860s. Located on the Arkansas River, Wichita soon became an important trading hub. The establishment of famous aircraft companies in the early 20 th century earned Wichita the nickname "The Air Capital of the World."
